Why Should you Join Middle School Choir?
Important choices need to be made regarding classes, programs, and even career pathways at Stillwater Schools.
Managing these choices can cause confusion and feel overwhelming.

Here's the good news - Stillwater Middle School has awesome elective classes! However, schedules get tight fast. Since students have often experienced choir for a year or more as they get older, it might seem like the logical class to "let go." We wish that students were able to enroll freely in coursework without feeling like they need to “give something up” in place of a new opportunity. We believe that choir is the best place to be at Stillwater Middle School and maintaining choir enrollment will benefit a student for years to come.
9 reasons
to stay in choir
work / play hard
Join choir for a fun and rigorous environment that builds community, confidence, and commitment. We only have 2 concert performances per year so that you can be as involved as you want while on the field, in class, and pursuing other interests.
Performance
Every year focuses more on performance. The first years of choir prioritize learning skills. By 8th grade, overnight tour and additional opportunities outside of the school setting showcase our goal of performance. Don’t quit before the fun really starts!
build grit
"One and done electives" accomplish a change of pace, but students also have similar opportunities in high school. Did you know that some juniors and seniors have difficulty filling their schedules because they have more time than actual classes to take? Consistent coursework builds grit.
growth in abilities
Choirs' work ethic and skill increases by as they age. 8th grade's abilities soar since it is a truly a chosen class made by our most dedicated singers.
lifelong skill
If a singer decides to drop, re-enrollment later is highly unlikely. Many adults wish they had been more involved in music throughout childhood. Music is a LIFELONG skill that is best developed in our youth.
sing among the best
The Stillwater Choir Program is a top ranking program in Minnesota. Many singers end up receiving college scholarships, even if they don't major in music. Singers in the High School Concert Choir may earn college credit for their coursework.
Motivation + skill = talent
Voice change can be difficult & frustrating in middle school! Give yourself time to grow into your vocal instrument. Motivation is equally as strong as skill at this age.
schedule strategically
Students may benefit from starting a language later in high school if they don’t plan on taking 4/5 years of study. Many (not all) colleges require 2 years of language, but they test the summer after your senior year on language competency. That’s a long time between instruction and a placement exam if your last class was taken as a freshman...
well-rounded
education
Fine Arts involvement is considered crucial by colleges and employers for creating well-rounded students. One of the highest awards in high school requires top achievement in athletics, academics, and the fine arts.
