Voice & Age Determined Choirs Based on Best-Practice Pedagogy

Let's learn some terms.  The choirs are named CAMBIATA and TREBLE.  Cambiata is easiest defined as "changing voices" and is made up of the lowest voices - bass, tenor, and unchanged/changing voices (often, but not always male).  In contrast, treble is best defined as upper range, and is made up of sopranos and altos (often, but not always female).  Historically, both males and females have had their voice parts labeled as soprano or alto depending on their stage of vocal development.

Students will gain new skills in a supportive community that will give them a renewed sense of confidence.  We sing a varied repertoire from around the world, build trust with each other through work, games, and activities, train our voices through healthy technique, and learn the language or music both visually (reading music) and aurally (using our ears as tools).  Choir is a place where all ability and skill levels are welcomed; the only true requirement is a desire to sing and learn.

Each choir is performance focused, which is very different from the general music ed approach in elementary school.  As a result, the following goals are present:

  • Sing!

    • Choir concert preparation through daily participation and  concert performance is mandatory

  • Independent musicianship

    • Learn to read music through solfege and standard notation  (music literacy)

    • Learn vocal performance skills, singing techniques, choral skills, and rehearsal skills

  • Exposure to new music of various cultures, styles, social contexts, and time periods.
